Why the scales aren’t helping you

Why do you want to lose weight?

How do you think you’ll feel when you’ve lost the weight that’s bothering you?

I’ll tell you now. It’s not just about health, your BMI, or finally accepting yourself and no longer berating your body.

What we really want to feel is peaceful and free.

Peaceful about food and eating, and no longer using it as a blunt tool to manage our emotional lives (which means we’re able to handle the full breadth of our emotions effectively).

And free to dress with ease, wear what we want, and live our lives happily and confidently in our bodies, knowing that we can enjoy food in an empowered way.

It’s peace and freedom you want. The number itself is the by-product.

As your brain starts to subconsciously churn ideas about how you’re going to reset and detox in January 😵‍💫, I encourage you to think about how the scales might be holding you back from feeling peace and freedom.

Because if they were so good at holding you accountable, wouldn’t they have worked by now?!

We’re conditioned to attach ourselves to the number and for that number to decide our value and acceptability in the world.

But my experience from working with lots of women is that the scales can distract us from being consistent with the habits that matter for the feelings we want.

Read that again!

Attachment to the scales can stop us from doing the required habits (like following our plan and not obeying our cravings) NO MATTER WHAT, no matter our mood, and it’s these habits which will create the outcomes we want.

The scales can stop us from treating ourselves with kindness DESPITE A NUMBER.

Because the truth is we don’t have the time when we’re rushing around each morning to make that number mean something helpful (and stop making it mean something unhelpful about our effort or enoughness).

If you get on the scales and are disappointed by what you see, you will either:

  • say f*ck-it and eat without much self-consideration or consciousness that day or weekend or even for the whole week (until you feel so cr*p that you start the whole thing again)!

  • OR you restrict further which will ALWAYS have it’s inevitable rebound (always always).

Or, maybe you like what you see and think that’s your cue to take your foot off the gas and stop doing the helpful things that created that outcome.

But all of these behaviours represent a disconnect with your body where you’re still using food to manage your emotions. It will never lead to the body you want. How could it?

So the goal is to connect with your body, to exist within it with grace and consciousness.

Your goal each day is to treat yourself well. With respect, gratitude, and love. Do you think the scales play a helpful part in that quest?

Of course the body you want is waiting for you on the other side of this loving commitment to self.

The key to permanent weight loss (not a temporary loss as a result of a short restriction - we don’t do that here 😎) is to not get distracted by the speed and expectation of weight loss! By the number on the scales!

So if what you want is peace and freedom and permanent weight loss, perhaps it’s time to step off the scales.

And to start making your DOABLE plan each day with the simple goal of following that plan because you want to show yourself care and attention today.

You can TRUST that the outcomes of this commitment will be exactly what you want:

✅ Peace and freedom to live vibrantly in your body. 🌟

✅ Enjoying food without negative consequence. 🌟

✅ A loving relationship with your body where you’re no longer using food to manage your emotions. 🌟

Focus on the feelings you want to feel and what action will make you feel that way TODAY and just keep doing those things.

And don’t let the scales distract you because they will most-likely only slow you down. 💥

p.s. if I didn’t know this worked, I wouldn’t be encouraging you to do it! 😘
